Tailoring your shape

It's important to know how good tailoring can accentuate your best bits and make the most of the figure you've worked so hard to achieve.

Here are some hints and tips on how to make the most of your shape.

If you're petite

  • Choose a pencil skirt that finishes just above or on the knee to create length and give the illusion of height. Matalan have got some great on-trend examples.
  • Avoid cropped trousers, as they will cut you off above the ankle and make you appear shorter.
  • Create a column of colour - sticking to a single shade will make you appear taller.
  • If you want to experiment with prints, keep them small so they don't overpower your frame.

If you're pear shaped

  • Choose a wide leg trouser with a lower waistband that will skim your hips and fall away over your curvy lower half.
  • Avoid high-waisted tapered styles, which will only accentuate your problem area.
  • Opt for an A-line skirt that skims the line of your hips and creates a streamlined look.
  • Pencil skirts are a no-no, but if you really want to try this style, go for a skirt that kicks out at the bottom to help balance out your hips.
  • Choose a structured jacket that defines your shoulders and nips you in at the waist to keep your top and bottom halves in proportion - avoid jackets that are cropped, as they'll only accentuate your widest area.

If you're apple shaped

  • Choose a flat fronted trouser that will skim over your tummy and avoid adding extra bulk.
  • Choose a jacket with a higher waistband to lengthen your torso.
  • Empire line dresses will skim over your tummy and accentuate your fabulous cleavage.

If you have an athletic frame

  • Slim fit trousers look fabulous on you; team them with a pair of killer heels in this season's animal print for evening or a classic pair of loafers for daytime chic.
  • Play with volume to create curves: accentuate your waist with a belted style of jacket or choose a sculptured skirt to give your hips definition.

If you're busty

  • Choose a wrap dress. The deep v will flatter and elongate your chest area.
  • Choose a jacket with narrow lapels to draw the eye up and down and lengthen your top half.
  • Don't choose anything too narrow on your lower body, as this will make you look top heavy. Choose an a-line skirt or wide leg trousers that balance out your larger top half.
  • Choose a shirt with a deep v-neck and stretch to avoid gaping, Wallis have some lovely jewel-coloured pieces. Shirts with high necks can make you look boxy.
