Kellogg's Special KAccessibility Statement

Version 1.0 - 4th September 09

Kellogg's is committed to working to ensure that the Special K website is accessible to all its customers and that the browsing experience on screen readers is continually improved.

Our new Special K website has been built using site level styling (CSS) to ensure the cleanest standards compliant, XHTML code. All pages use structured semantic mark-up where possible. This site uses only relative font sizes, compatible with the user-specified "text size" option in browser "view" menus.

We are working towards a Level 1(A) W3C accessibility pass for this site.

Accessible browsing advice

If you're looking for practical help in modifying your browser settings such as text size, using access keys, speech, brail browsing and other accessibility aids, we recommend visiting the accessibility help on the BBC My web My way website.

Outlined below are certain build features we have implemented within the site that merit specific mention.

Navigation and navigation aids

The primary site navigation is located at the top of each page.

Secondary navigation per content area is contained in the left-hand column.

A link to the home page is available on each page through the Special K logo.

Navigation menus are marked up as HTML lists and styled with CSS.

When the site is viewed in a text-only browser, the 'skip to content' link becomes visible at the top of each page.

All Forms have their labels explicitly associated with their controls, aiding users of certain screen readers and speech browsers.

A link to the sitemap of this Special K site (a listing of every page to allow you to easily find the information you are looking for) is accessible on every page within the footer.

Links

Most links are text based within the site. Many of those links have title attributes, which describe the link in greater detail. Any graphical links carry descriptive ALT tags in place.

Images

All content images used in this site include descriptive ALT attributes. Decorative graphics include null ALT attributes. Image replacement techniques have also been used throughout this site so that non-visual readers will be able to show text descriptions to explain the significance of each image used.

Flash

The site has embedded usage of Flash animation and video in Flash Player 9. Text tagging and / or Flash file replacement associated with the animated or movie file has been used. The main sections using Flash tools are:

The BMI Calculator: A non Flash version available at www.kelloggs.co.uk/health/tools/bmicalculator.aspx.

About the plans and benefits of snacking: Flash video

Products page: This is a static ALT tagged version of the products carousel in place and links to product pages.

JavaScript

The site, and especially the My Special K section uses JavaScript throughout, however it is only used to enhance the users experience, if your browser does not fully support it, the page content remains accessible.

Known issues we are working on

Currently the video within the site does not have a non flash alternative or a non visual alternative (e.g. transcripts).

Some non-navigational graphics are contained within background images.

No support for access keys.
